Using a Computer for Your Finances
Have you fallen in love with the computer age or do you loathe it as much as all the other electronics? Whether you like it or not can have a big impact on how you treat your finances. If you love computers and using software, chances are you use a software program such as Quicken or Microsoft Money to manage your finances, or maybe you make your own Excel Spreadsheet. If you prefer pen and paper, you are living in the dark ages.
There are many problems with writing out all of your finances. First, it is very tedious. You have to first get a special book or design some way to organize them efficiently, and then you have to write everything out by hand. If you are budgeting precisely, you will have to recopy a lot, and this causes a huge waste of time. Also, it can really cramp up your hand after a little while.
Another big problem is that when writing by hand and calculating with a hand-held calculator or in your hand, you can make a lot of mistakes. How many times had you made little mistakes on a math test in school that ruined your whole answer? This can very easily happen when doing numbers in a budget plan. You have to look over your work carefully, and if there is an error, you have to correct it. The problem may have started far in the beginning meaning you have to change a lot of answers.
Using even just a simple spreadsheet can make budgeting so much easier. You type up what you need and any duplicates can be easily copy and pasted. What's even better is that you can feel your spreadsheet with formulas that do all the computations easily and perfectly for you. If you set it up right, money management can become one of the easiest things you do.
Software programs are even more do it yourself. They have it all set up for you and all you have to do is fill in the necessary forms. Also, the developers can often do a much better and more organized job than you can.
So if you are still using your budget notebook from 1985, you really should consider taking a look at your computer and trying out some of the great, simple programs available to you. You can save a lot of time and effort.
